The Poignant Sky   Going Back to the South Pacific, A Now and Then Journey

Robert W. Stenglein

Born in Saginaw, Michigan, Bod Stenglein was a junior at Duke Univesity at the time of Pearl Harbor.   He joined the Army Air Corps in January 1942, served two years in the South Pacific as a pilot in the Troop Carrier Command.   Bob and his 68th Squadron mates flew their transport planes into extreme situations routinely, were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the Fifth Air Force CO, General George Kenney.   Those experiences were so unforgettable, Bob had to go back to Australia and New Guinea fifty five years later and re-live some of the them.

The Poignant Sky is the story of that reprise visit, with links to the actual wartime situations.   Bob moved to California in 1984, lives in the area north of San Francisco.   He is a proud father and grandfather of two daughters and three grandchildren.
