U.S.A.A.F. Combat Cargo Groups of the Second World War

3rd Combat Cargo Group, 9th Combat Cargo Squadron

Introduction

Julius Lang,  Combat Photographer

I was a combat photographer attached to the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 9th Combat Cargo Squadron.  I hooked up with the outfit at Moran, Assam, India during the battle of Myiktina, Burma.  We were supplying the 36th British Division and Merrill’s Marauder’s.   We moved in January 1945 to Warazup, Burma to an airstrip there.  I set up a photo lab there and flew there on Recon missions.  Then the Mars Task Force took over from Myiktina and we went on south to Lashio.  This was a bloody time and we lost many planes.  I consider myself luck to not have gone down.  I had to fly in these C-47s to take photos of the drops and located the new targets.  So I was not on the ground much.

From Warazup, we moved to Myiktina and set up at the North airstrip.  There were four (4) airfields at Myiktina.  I was there until the end of the War and finally left in October 1945 for Uncle Sugar Able, but I didn’t get home until January 1946.  By the time I finished my tour in the CBI, I had basically sailed around the world.  I had left to go overseas from California and returned by New York.

I am looking for former members of the 3rd Combat Cargo Group,  1st, Combat Cargo Group, 2nd Combat Cargo Group and the 4th Combat Cargo Group.  In fact I would like to hear from anyone who flew over the Hump during WW II, or flew any Combat Cargo Missions at any time (Berlin Air-Lift, Korea, etc)
