Imphal, The Hump and Beyond
U.S.A.A.F. Combat Cargo Groups of the Second World War
2nd Combat Cargo Group, 7th Combat Cargo Squadron
Introduction
| It all began with
orders saying, "The following officers and enlisted men will proceed
without delay to SAAB, Syracuse, New York, to report for duty on project
X-ray." No one knew just what that meant, but it was certain to
be something new and different. As in every other Army unit there
were men from all walks of life. But these were from all walks of
the Air Forces, too. Among the clews were representatives of
transports, bombers, and fighters. It gave everyone the impression
of being something big and special. And it was.
Day after day the men came by road, by rail, and by air. Once arrived, the first days were spent in becoming acquainted with the fine city of Syracuse and its splendid citizens, many of whom were particularly attractive to the single men. Then the work began. This was the activation of the Fifth Combat Cargo Squadron of the Second Combat Cargo Group. This was the beginning of a team; a team of men who were to train together, work together, live together, and fly together all the way through to Tokyo itself. This book is to be their story from the beginning in Syracuse to the present in Japan, a story of their friendships, hardships, and experiences their joys and sorrows; the good and the bad. This is to be the chronicle of airmen as they really live and work while doing a glamourless job. This is the History of an Air Force unit as set down by its own members. Where there is praise let no man laugh for honest men are slow to see merit in themselves. It is hoped that you who see this book will enjoy fully its amusing and light aspects as well as its serious side.
