U.S.A.A.F Combat Cargo Groups of the Second World War

C-47B, #43-48957

Thanks to MSgt. Dave Tarnowski, 328th Airlift Squadron for the following Information

The Museum of Avaition at Warner Robins Museum released C-47B #43-48957 as excess to the Air Force Museum which in turn went down the waiting list of folks that have requested one.  Although we were not first on that list, another AF Base declined and we were next!   It was a huge surprise when the first choice for the C-47 backed down and it became ours.

The first major snag was regarding the airlift.  It seems they need $6,000.00 to build a cradle for
the fuselage!?   It was decided to move the aircraft from Warner Robins Georgia via truck..  We have an assembly team coming up in May to put the big pieces together and hope to have all the little pieces assembled and have her on display for a dedication on September 8th. We intend to display her in the Markings of the 3rd CCS and one of the Squadron's original tail numbers.

The C-47 is now on it's wheels, engine mounted.   Still alot to do, but it's getting there.

I am looking for former members of the 3rd Combat Cargo Group,  1st, Combat Cargo Group, 2nd Combat Cargo Group and the 4th Combat Cargo Group.  In fact I would like to hear from anyone who flew over the Hump during WW II, or flew any Combat Cargo Missions at any time (Berlin Air-Lift, Korea, etc)

Please e-mail comment, suggestions, corrections,etc to: bill@comcar.org
